We attended the 24th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting at our local library tonight. Elves passed out brownies and cups of hot apple cider while we sang Christmas carols. It was snowing the entire time as we sang around the steps of the library.

This was Drew’s first experience seeing Santa. In fact, this is the first Christmas where we’ve really even talked about Santa. Drew kept looking up in the sky (I guess he thought Santa was going to fly in on his sleigh) and when Santa rode in on a firetruck I heard a tiny boy squeal.

In the midst of the shivering crowd, Santa turned on the lights and then gave hugs and candy canes. It wasn’t the moment for sitting on his knee – it was the moment for magic. At one point Daniel turned to me and said, “do you want to get on my shoulders or something?” I was squealing just as much as the kids.

I was wearing reindeer antlers and when Santa got to us, he pointed at my antlers and asked Drew, “what does your Mommy have on her head?” Drew had been wide-eyed up until this point and then he just broke into the hugest smile and gave this adorable belly laugh and said “ANTLERS!” Santa chuckled deliciously and said “my reindeer at the North Pole have antlers just like that!”

It was such a wonderful winter evening. And the best part was when we saw a little boy running after Santa. He was shouting “Grandpa, Grandpa!”

Drew,

In the midst of yogurt spills and dinosaur fights, we ended up in a huge fuss this morning. I really don’t know how we can start our day with red cheeks and giggling in the bed and end up exasperated within an hour.

We butt heads sometimes. I don’t know if it’s because you are four or because you are just like your Mommy. And Daddy. But no matter, we still know how to curl up on the couch and give forgiving kisses.

When I was a little girl, your Poppy taught me to always apologize when you’re wrong. Swallow your pride, wipe your tears, and say you’re sorry. And I think you and I are getting the hang of that as well.

I love you. And I love how I learn more about myself just by walking beside you.

sly boy

I’ll always say I’m sorry when I overwhelm you. And I’ll try my best to not melt in the floor when you stammer an apology through tears.

We’re in this together, kiddo.

P.S. Those dinosaurs were the best money I’ve ever spent. I think we’ll be playing with them even when you’re in college.

"true love" - 4/25

In the midst of a day of errand-running and puddle-splashing, Drew found a cozy spot and clung to it.

"snowman jammies" - 2/25

Drew got these pajamas for LAST Christmas and they are still way too long. He’s been flopping about in them with the grace of a giraffe on skates. Ha! Skates. Perhaps the lack of grace on skates runs in the family.

I’ve rolled the legs up a bit so he can “drive around” without face planting but when I asked him to lay down for a picture he said “watch me pull them up on my tummy and look weird!” And that was helpful because they look normal for once.

Our slow morning took speed as we visited The Children’s Museum for a few hours today.

The rest of our day was a mix of more pool-time, visiting with Judy & Milton, and a late night dinner at Cracker Barrel.

I’m exhausted again tonight. It feels like we’ve been enjoying each day up until the last second. That’s not a bad thing but it’s hard to sleep in when you have a four year old who wakes Wiggly and Ready for the Day very early.

Tomorrow is our last day of vacation here. It feels as though we’ve arrived too quickly and at the same time, that we’ve relished every second. My dear sweet parents have went out of their way to make memories with us and I am eager to spend another day laughing and playing.
