day eight.

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

I am completely and utterly exhausted right now. BONE TIRED. I just asked Daniel to bring me my headphones so I could escape into some music while I write. I know he feels like my wearing headphones cuts me off from the flow of conversation but after the day I’ve had, I just need to sink into music therapy. And a hot shower.

Drew and I trekked off to Greer this morning to spend time with my dearest friend Kerry and her little boy Deacon. A wave of nostalgia hit me when we hugged. Those long nights talking in her room. Watching her brush her hair over her sink while my fingers danced on the glass of the fish tank in her old room. Playing Myst in the A-frame at The Wilds. All our years in high and college. All.the.memories.

Our paths have woven together at different times since college. Some times we keep in touch a bit more than others and there is always that hesitancy of will it be the same? Does friendship last this long? What if you change as individuals? Can you still have that same bond? But every single time we come face to face again, all those tiny worries melt within seconds. And we part again with tears in our eyes.

Today was extra special because our sons were giggling and roaring at each other. OUR SONS.

It was also my first time seeing her new home and swoon it was beautiful!

Drew and I finally pulled ourselves away (we missed seeing the chickens! boo!) and drove back to Liberty in time to see Aunt Judy! Mom and The Grandboy curled up in the swing on the back porch so Judy and I could have some aunt/niece time to talk/hug/share. I hadn’t seen her in a LONG time (over a year!) and it was so wonderful to sit and talk.

I knew she must have a myriad of emotions going on right now as Jonathan and Tara are in Russia and she’s missing them, worrying, hoping, praying, and loving from afar as they bring home their little M. I got to see pictures though!! I teared up while looking through them and felt such love for the entire process of adoption.

After Aunt Judy left, Mom took us to her now-that-she’s-retired-job (she tutors children in town). Drew and I both loved her office and he immediately began playing with a chart she had on her desk. It was especially nice to see this new chapter of her life.

Then it was a trip to the store as we shopped for food and pool things! When we pulled back into The Valley we saw that Dad/Poppy was already home from work and Drew was thrilled to show him his new dump truck.

We had an evening meal out on the porch and watched Drew splash in the lop-sided pool (I didn’t realize I set it up on a slight hill) until dark.

SPLONK

I also saw a little sneaker playing with a “toy” near the path to the creek. I went to see what he had and it was one of Milton’s gardening gloves. I SAVED IT. 😀

And imagined what it will look like when Stephen and Drew will be playing all over the backyard next summer.

As we were finishing up pool-time, my Aunt Dena stopped by and we had a lovely visit as well. She brought Drew a solar-powered car and we had immense fun trying to get it to do ANYTHING by holding a flashlight over it. It wriggled around a bit but I’m imagining some morning sun will have it performing beautifully tomorrow. It was great to see her and I felt happy to have soaked up so much family/friend love today.

But I’m bone-tired. I tucked Drew in bed tonight and he fussed and fussed about needing a particular car to sleep with and because I was so achy and tired I told him no, not tonight. Just snuggle your bumble bee and go to sleep. We went back and forth over this for probably ten minutes with both our voices becoming louder and more fussy. And finally I loudly said, I JUST DON’T FEEL LIKE GOING DOWNSTAIRS TO GET IT. I AM SO TIRED I WANT TO CRY. And Drew’s little tiny voice said, “but Mommy, it’s just down on the floor beside my bed.”

Yes, I felt awful. So I apologized all over myself, gave him his car, and kissed him a thousand times. And within minutes, he was sound asleep.

And now I’m done writing, these earbuds are killing my ears, and a hot shower is calling my name. Thank you, day eight, for making my soul feel so full even if my body is crying for rest.

day six.

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Our first day of vacation has been lazy, water-filled, and full of exploration. But before I get to all that I need to share a few pictures from our trip down.

The highlights of today were:

little snuggly boys

Relaxing on the back-porch and hanging out with The Adorable Stephen.

bouncing on Grammy's bed

Bouncing all over the house and exploring every nook and cranny. I should go ahead and admit that before I’d see anyone else this morning, I snuck into my mom’s craft closet to poke around. I’m so nosy. There were STICKERS and PAPERS and SHINY THINGS and oooh, I want that and I NEED THAT.

drew & grammy

There was time for silly pictures, too. Drew informed me today that I was the “best silly face teacher EVER.”

spying

Stephen has a new swing set/fort in The Valley so Drew climbed all over it and spied on neighbors. I think he will be in there all week.

sprinkler time!

As the sun started to set, we got the sprinkler out and had enormous amounts of fun.

happy 34th anniversary to my parents!

Also, it is my parent’s 34th anniversary today! This is a beautiful picture of them on their wedding day.

We also got to hang out with Granny this evening and even though Drew bounced all over her house in HYPER MODE she still gave him chocolate balls. They are best friends now. 😛 AND, we had Zaxby’s chicken today. Food coma + swoon + die happy.

Here’s the ongoing South Carolina Vacation Flickr set.

day five.

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Surprise! We’re in South Carolina a day earlier. I called my mom two hours out and said, “I’m so sorry but we aren’t going to be able to come tomorrow.” She very quietly and sadly said, “ohh, okay. Are you going to be able to come at all?” “YES! I AM TWO HOURS AWAY.”

Cue southern screaming and giggling.

We’re here. We made an 11-hour trip in 14 hours. Heh. IMPRESSIVE, right? Three things before I fall over and crash in bed: 1.) I’m never traveling without the Internet again. This trip was so much more awesome. 2.) Packing all of our meals/snacks in the cooler was the best idea. Why have we never done *all* our meals this way? 3.) Always be prepared for the inevitable. You know, like your child running all over the house for two hours (after arriving), eating a ton of food, and then projectile vomiting obscene amounts of…everything. Oh, goodness. Yeah, it was bad.

But now he feels better and is cozily sleeping in his massive green bed. We’re in the Yellow Room and so incredibly thankful to have had a safe trip and to just be here.

P.S. It still counts as Day 5, right? Until 2am? Isn’t that the *cough* official rule?

Dear Jennifer,

Please don’t skip your thyroid medicine again. Especially for a week. You will be depressed, lethargic, low on energy, unable to walk around without crying, and absolute positive that everyone is out to get you. And not everyone will understand why you are so miserable.

We went to the Saline Winter Festival yesterday. It was very small-town-like which was rather nice. We kept seeing people bump into other people they knew and it reminded us of Easley. Other than the freezing temperature, it was fun. Arts and crafts, ice carvings, ice skating, and general mayhem.

~

Three good things:

1. My obsession with Lie to Me doesn’t have to stop. Season Three is available on Hulu Plus and I have a week long free trial. o_0 I guess that means lots of watching.

2. I played Funglish with Steve, Cassidy, and her parents last night and AUGH it was so much fun.

3. We have about three inches of snow on the ground right now and on Tuesday and Wednesday we are supposed to get between 8 – 14 inches of fresh snow. I have never seen that much snow so even though I’m tired of winter and aching for warmer weather, I don’t mind seeing a BUNCH before spring.

Here’s a picture of Ski Brighton that I talked about a few days ago! It’s sort of a small place but hey, SKIING.

I finally tried another game of Scrabble.

This is the one board game that I’m not a fan of at all and it’s mostly because Daniel is amazingly good at it and plays words that I secretly think are ALL LIES.

There is also drama surrounding this game because we played it on our honeymoon and it got so fussy that I walked out on the game, out of the room, and left my fresh new husband sitting there thinking, um, what just happened? YOU PLAYED ZA. THAT is what happened.

But we all played a game last night and it was quite fun (except for Drew who was trying to go to sleep and kept coming out to announce that he just couldn’t do it).

Steve and Cassidy brought cupcakes that were delicious. And as we ate more, the night grew more silly.

And don’t let this picture fool you. Even though Daniel is Srs Bsns on his iPhondle, he was just a kooky as the rest of us.

And then it just got weird.

OR DO I MEAN AWESOME?
