stupid is as stupid does.

“What is the stupidest thing you did this year? What about in your whole life? You can take stupid to mean: embarrassing, dangerous, funny, lame, whatever you consider stupid.” – Kassie

This year: Attempting to go rollerskating with Daniel, Drew, and some friends at a Mardi Gras party.

I’d never been rollerskating before and had fantastic images of swooshing in between people, striped socks, derby girls, and beads flying. We entered the fray with wild abandon. Daniel kept Drew from dancing out onto the rink while I found skates.

I sat down, slid them on, and stood up. WHOAAAAAAAA. Wobble wobble wobble splat. My friends started zooming and I sat on the bench. Okay, okay, I can do this. I’ll try holding onto the wall. OH UGH WOBBLE WOBBLE SPLAT. Why did a tiny five year old just waltz by me and give me that look? How can she do this? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

I tried so many times. It was deliciously horrid. I managed a small laugh when I saw another girl having my same problem. We both painfully smiled and shrugged. One of my friends twirled around me with a “oh, you just glide like this…” and she gloriously swirled and swooshed and whirled. I put one foot out and then AUUUHHHGGHH. No. No. Just no.

It didn’t help that my son saw my wobbling and began shrieking “MOMMY IS GOING TO GET HURT!”

So I sat on my little bench the rest of the night. No dreamy derby for me.

My whole life: I’m sure there are some stupid things I’m not remembering but this one is something I think of pretty often: Cashing out my 401(k) to buy children’s clothes that I never sold.

When I quit working, I had a bit of money put away in my 401(k). Not a ton but it was almost $5,000. I had a friend who had quit her job and become an eBay maven so I decided to buy a pallet of children’s clothing from an outlet store. The idea was that I’d sell each outfit on eBay for $7 or more and make up the cost and much more.

A semi pulled up to our apartment that weekend and we moved boxes and boxes and boxes of children’s clothes. And for the next five years, I lugged those clothes around with us every single time we moved. And we’ve moved quite a bit.

I had hundreds and hundreds of outfits. I think I sold about ten on eBay, gave a handful away, and donated the rest to The Salvation Army this past summer.

Beyond stupid, I know.

I’m taking part in a blogging group called Reverb Broads that will be suggesting daily blogging prompts this December. If you want to join in, feel free! Go here or here to learn more. And thank you to Bethany for the idea!

A meme about your significant other. Stolen from Facebook, Dooce, and Annie. Play along!

What are your middle names?
My middle name is Anne and his is Kenneth.

How long have you been together?
We’ve been together for 4 years and 3 months.

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
About a month.

Who asked whom out?
Daniel did. It was something about “so, are we going to make this for real? I guess you’re my girl.”

How old are each of you?
Me: 27
Him: 29

Whose siblings do you see the most?
Well, since I don’t have any siblings, we do, interestingly, end up seeing his more.

Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
Finances.

Did you go to the same school?
Nope. I went to Bob Jones and Daniel was home-schooled in Baltimore.

Are you from the same home town?
No, I’m from Liberty, South Carolina and he doesn’t have a home town really. That sounds sad but I asked him…and he just gave me a puzzled look. I know he grew up in Pennsylvania and considers this his real “home state” but he lived in a few different cities here when he was a child.

Who is smarter?
Hands down, Daniel is. Absolutely without a doubt. We’re both nerds and we aren’t terribly secretive about that but he’s brilliant about pretty much everything. He knows the most trivia of anyone I’ve ever met and I’m constantly asking him to explain things like chemistry, physics, history, etc…and he knows how to explain it all. Which fascinates me because I don’t remember half of what I learned in school.

Who is the most sensitive?
That’s me.

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
Hmm. Since we moved here, I’m not sure. We don’t go to a lot of fancy diners multiple times because a toddler doesn’t always do well in those types of places. We have discovered that Drew likes the atmosphere at Cracker Barrel (he loves to look at the fire, rocking chairs, toys, etc) and he’s always behaved when we go there so I’d say that’s where we go more than any other restaurant. At least, since we’ve moved. And, when we aren’t eating at home.

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Here, to Pennsylvania.

Who has the craziest exes?
Ha. Daniel doesn’t have any exes so I guess that’d be me. But none of my exes are crazy. That I know of. 😉

Who has the worst temper?
Yeah, that’s me. I’ve damaged things. Daniel just gets really, really quiet and goes into a shell. But I get loud and cry and have to TALK ABOUT FEELINGS and all that.

Who does the cooking?
I do, mostly. But in the past month, Daniel started cooking a lot more.

Who is the neat-freak?
I don’t really know…hmm. Neither of us freak out if there are clothes lying in the floor or towels in the bathroom. The laundry gets done, and so we’re mostly okay with it. But I do know that if Daniel is stressed about work or life in general, then the house will bother him much more. But he won’t ask me to do it – he’ll jump in and started straightening. And that’s when I know that ooooh, so the laundry was bothering you

Who is more stubborn?
We are actually both very stubborn.

Who hogs the bed?
It used to me but I think I’m much better now.

Who wakes up earlier?
Always me. I used to wake up at 6:30 or earlier when we first got married (I’m very much an Early Bird and Daniel is a Late Owl) but as time has passed, I’ve totally switched and now I stay up late with Daniel and Drew and we all wake up slowly. But I always wake up before Daniel. I have to spend a considerable amount of time waking him and he gets fussy and ornery and stomps off to take his shower and then afterwards, he’s chipper and happy and a completely different man. Hehe.

Where was your first date?
At an Italian restaurant in Easley, SC. Capri’s.

Who is more jealous?
I don’t think either of us are really jealous.

How long did it take to get serious?
All during the month that we were “just talking” it was still very serious – so, I guess from the beginning.

Who eats more?
I don’t really know. Heh. Interesting. I can put away sweets and bread very easily and he rarely, I mean rarely, eats sweets. But he can eat boatloads of bananas and peanut butter and cereal and odd man food that I don’t eat very much of at all. And he gets seconds quite often of main dishes.

Who does the laundry?
I think we both keep it going pretty well. Sometimes he helps me out more and sometimes I have it all done. He likes to fold though.

Who’s better with the computer?
He is. But I get testy about asking him for computer help. I like to solve the problem myself, thankyouverymuch, especially blog-related trouble.

Who drives when you are together?
He does. Unless he has a headache or feels sick.

In the immortal words of dooce: “Feel free to answer some or all of the same questions about your significant other in the comments, or leave a link to your website if you prefer answering there.”

I tag Shannon, Becca, Superbeck, Rick, Wendy, Kerry, and Kari.

meme wednesday.

We are back home from traveling up the coast and visiting in Maryland and Pennsylvania (and seeing the house – it’s amazing) and all I have to show for it is a horrid cold and a list a mile long of things I need to do before we move.

So, here’s a nice little meme I’ll share with you instead of writing about the past few days. They were wonderful (except for the throwing the cheeseburger at Daniel while he was driving 80 mph) but I’m so overwhelmed and sick at the moment that I do not think I can write clearly about it all.

I got this from Bethany Actually and if you need blog fodder, you can take it too.

Ten Things I Wish I Could Say to Ten Different People Right Now:

1. You have encouraged me so much by sharing your story and offering bits of wisdom. We have had a lot of tears and laughter. I just wish you had the courage to take off your mask with everyone else and let them see who I see.

2. I’ve always been a bit uncomfortable around you (I don’t know why you intimidate me) but with just a few words the other day, you completely put me at ease and made me feel not only appreciated, but genuinely liked.

3. Your loyalty is admired by most. But I’d be careful that it doesn’t become idolatry.

4. When I met you for the first time, I thought your eyes seemed so old-soul. Later, someone told me that you have a bit of heartache in your story. It made sense and I wanted to make you warm food, swap stories, and build a friendship. I hope time allows for that.

5. I’ve watched you give of yourself in so many ways (especially financially) and I hope that God allows me to do the same for others some day. You have never asked for attention and you downplay your generosity and I see God all over your spirit.

6. I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.

7. You are more patient and wise than a lot of people think. And I’m glad I started believing in you instead of listening to those around me.

8. You think you rule the roost but you are losing respect from those closest around you. I hope you don’t wake up one day and find that everyone around you is gone. We all love you but want more for you.

9. You are beautiful even though you think you aren’t. Do not feel the need to hide your smile and love of life. Maybe getting away will help. Remember, starting over can be a good thing.

10. You know what you need to do to make your life better. Take the steps, even though it will hurt, and make the decisions that will change your life forever. For the better.

Nine Things About Myself:

1. I spent a lot of time looking at Pottery Barn to get ideas for items I want to find in either vintage shops or flea markets.

2. I’ve always thought it is so weird to put dishes in the oven for storage. I even tease my best friend Kerry about it (who admitted that she does it). But before she came over to the house the other afternoon (she went to the hospital with me while I had a CT scan done), I hid some in my oven. I succumbed!

3. My hair is bugging me. I think I have hit a frumpy hairstyle and I suddenly Do Not Like It. Once we get settled in a new town, I think I’ll go out and find a salon and choose something brave. Not necessarily blue or two inches long, mind you. But just something that makes me feel beautiful.

4. I am having trouble keeping the semi-serious promise that I made to my husband about not buying any more books until I have read all of the ones I have. I keep finding more books and if I buy them used on Amazon, well, that’s better than Barnes and Noble, right? 😉

5. This is the first year that I have ever seen the Olympics and I have been utterly amazed, stunned, and in complete awe of these people from all over the world who have trained so hard to reach their goals. It’s inspired me to join the YMCA in Carlisle!

6. In the past few months, I have had an urge to learn to play classical piano again. I spent sometime reading through a few piano books while vacationing with the Bergey’s this past weekend and it just reminded me once more that I really need to find a good music shop where I can get some classical pieces. Music is a good outlet for me.

7. I wear a pony-tail holder on my wrist at all times. This could be a clue to my lack of interest in the current frumpy hairstyle.

8. For this holiday season, I’m contemplating taking the pledge to buy handmade.

9. I enjoy using sore throat spray a little too much. Especially the cherry flavor. The recommended dosage is spray 5 times every 2 hours. HA! Riiiight. About thirty sprays every two minutes. That might do it.

Eight Ways to Win My Heart:

1. Sing with me.

2. Be kind to the person who is serving us a meal (chef, waiter, waitress). And tip well.

3. Remember my name.

4. Don’t jump to conclusions.

5. Reach out to people who are different than you.

6. Read books. Piles of them. And eagerly tell me about them.

7. Scratch my back! I melt like a …melty noodle person.

8. Look at me while we have a conversation.

Seven Things That Cross My Mind a Lot:

1. I wonder if things will get better.

2. I hate debt.

3. Is it time to wake up already?

4. Drew is so amazingly cute. And I know I’m biased.

5. What time I am afraid, I will trust in You.

6. What on earth am I going to make for supper tonight?

7. Didn’t I JUST change your diaper?!

Six Things I Do Before I fall asleep:

1. Lock the doors

2. Set the a/c

3. Get ready for bed

4. Read or Internet

5. Set my alarm

6. Take off my jewelry

Five People Who Mean a Lot: please remember, there are way more than five!

2. Drew

3. Kerry

4. Jonathan

5. Camille

Four Things You’re Wearing Right Now:

2. Denim shorts

3. Black flip-flops

4. Sparkly head-band

Three Songs That You Listen to Often (Currently):

1. The Littlest Birds by The Be Good Tanyas

2. My Enemies Are Men Like Me by Derek Webb

3. Velveteen Queen by The Major Labels

Two Things You Want to Do Before You Die:

1. Get healthy

2. Travel with my family

One Confession:

1. The dishes that I hid in my oven were not because of any storage issues (although I do not have a lot of storage in the Mo-Ho and I will have much more in Carlisle) but because they were dirty and I didn’t want them to sit in the sink. 😛

fifty things i love.

Monday, September 26th, 2005

In the spirit of Kristin, I present 50 Things I Love:

1. Daniel – and I miss him dreadfully right now. He’s in Ohio for a week. It’s not that we are terribly clingy. I’m just use to having my best friend around. And I feel like part of me is missing.

2. My mom and dad – they are dear, wonderful people. I know they love me with an undying love and that means more than anything else. I love the moments when I really step back and watch them. For instance, when dad was helping Daniel load our dining room suite (we got a dining room suite this past week!) onto the truck – it was so tender. The two men I love more than any – working hard and both shooting me glances to make sure I approved. And the other day when I went to mom’s house and found her sleeping on the couch. She was tired, headachy – but she suddenly grew very wiggly when I told her that the furniture was Just Down Stairs!

3. Going to the Piano Studio in Anderson and listening to Daniel tear up the Steinway and Petrov. Oh, that we could have one now!

4. Comfortable shoes – unlike the brown ones that hurt my feet last week. Argh!

5. Ritz crackers and peanut butter

6. Gloria 34 by Taylor Sorenson

7. Selling things on Ebay

8. Silky red ribbon with embroidery

9. Feeling peace wash over you

10. Good customer service

11. Practicing flute etudes

12. That it’s only 116 days until I become Mrs. Daniel Bergey

34. Audioblogs – only from people I know

35. Talking around the proverbial water cooler – and the real one, too

36. Finding an old “garageband mixdown” of Daniel’s – in which he sings four different parts. Quite impressive.
